MHSA’s Congregate program is comprised of eight emergency family homeless shelters, funded through the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)’s Emergency Assistance program. Operating in Boston’s Dorchester and Mattapan neighborhoods, the Congregate program provides intensive case management and rehousing services to 82 families. Administrative operations for the Congregate program are based in the Dudley Street office.
In collaboration with several dozen community partners, Congregate employees are trained to address a wide range of barriers faced by homeless families, including trauma, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, financial insecurity and more. Families are also screened for various housing opportunities, with the ultimate goal of placement into safe and secure permanent housing.
While in shelter, families receive 24/7 monitoring and support from multiple tiers of Congregate staff. The Congregate program utilizes the Facilities Department, along with regular, routine inspections to ensure the quality and safety of all units. All families participating in MHSA’s Congregate program are also required to adhere to the Uniform Shelter Rules, as determined by DHCD.
Congregate participants can expect an environment where dignity, respect and empowerment are strongly emphasized by both the Program and MHSA as a whole. With the support of a focused, well-trained and caring staff, families are encouraged to make meaningful, positive change while on their way to securing appropriate, affordable and permanent housing.
