MHSA’s Scattered Site program is comprised of 108 emergency family homeless shelter units, funded through the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)’s Emergency Assistance program. With individual units spread throughout the City of Boston, the Scattered Site program provides intensive case management and rehousing services to 110 families, many of whom require an independent living space due to a disability, medical condition or other qualifying circumstance.
In collaboration with several dozen community partners, Scattered Site employees are trained to address a wide range of barriers faced by homeless families, including trauma, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, financial insecurity and more. Participating families are also screened for various housing opportunities, with the ultimate goal of placement into safe and secure permanent housing.
While in a Scattered Site unit, families receive regular monitoring and support from their assigned Case Manager. The Scattered Site program utilizes the Facilities Department, along with regular, routine inspections to ensure the quality and safety of all units. All families participating in MHSA’s Scattered Site program are also required to adhere to the Uniform Shelter Rules, as determined by DHCD.
Scattered Site participants can expect an environment where dignity, respect and empowerment are strongly emphasized by program staff and MHSA as a whole. With the support of a focused, well-trained and caring staff, families are encouraged to make meaningful, positive change while on their way to securing appropriate, affordable and permanent housing.
